From a homestead called Tregeare

The suburb takes its name from the homestead that J K Lethbridge called Tregeare in 1871, after a family property in England. The modern streets came much later, as part of the estate housing built around Mount Druitt from the mid-1960s — single-storey homes, regular blocks, concrete tile throughout.

Hail and an old tile roof

Tregear sits in the part of Sydney that collects summer storm cells, and a sixty-year-old tile roof has far less in reserve than a new one. Hail does two things to it:

Immediately. Cracks tiles along the ribs, chips the surface, dents gutters and bends whirlybird cowls.

Afterwards. Where the surface skin has been knocked off, the tile becomes porous. It absorbs water, gets heavier, grows lichen and eventually becomes brittle. That is a slow failure that starts on a single afternoon.

The everyday problems too

Not every job here is a claim. The ordinary list on a Tregear roof is loose ridge caps, washed-out pointing, rusted valley irons, blocked gutters and the occasional slipped tile letting water onto an unsarked ceiling. Those are roof repairs, or a full restoration if the whole roof is at the same stage.
