Riverstone Roofing, Old Village and New Estates

The meatworks town, then and now

Riverstone was named by Lieutenant-Colonel Maurice Charles O'Connell after his birthplace in Ireland, with an "e" added when the railway station arrived. Benjamin Richards established the Riverstone Meatworks here in 1878, and the old village grew around the station and that industry.

Then the growth area arrived. Riverstone now has two completely separate roofscapes within a few kilometres of each other, and they could not need more different work.

The old village

Older cottages, some weatherboard, with corrugated metal roofs that have been repainted more than once, or early tile. What we find: rust starting at laps and fixings, perished screw washers, flashings that have been resealed repeatedly rather than replaced, and gutters at the end of their life. Repairs here need a careful hand, because patching badly on an old roof usually means doing it again in two years. See roof repairs and metal roofing.

The new estates

Large modern roofs, narrow eaves, plenty of penetrations and gutter runs working hard in heavy rain. Faults are workmanship and detail rather than age: flashing cover, penetration seals, downpipe capacity. See gutter repair and replacement.
